The last month has been hectic for the UT MARA Deb Soc as they race to finish all activities before the grueling examination month of April. Having successfully launched UiTM Speaker’s Corner and Training with Former World Debate Champion, Anna Garsia, they are back on top of the Malaysian debate scene by winning the UiTM Intervarsity Debating Championship, beating MMU in the Finals. This victory is a perfect start of the revival efforts undertaken by the newly established Debate Unit to get the English Debating Team back to its winning ways.

The month of March was one which the “UT MARA Deb Soc” (UiTM English Debating Society) used much help from two of the most talented annas around. First, MARA’s very own Ana Rafali kicked off the Deb Soc’s “Speakers Corner” in an artistic style with a host of bands coming and treating the event like an open mic showdown. Second, Anna Garsia from the University of Sydney who is a former world universities’ debate champion (winning it in Vancouver, 2007), made a surprise visit to train the MARA debaters who will be competing in the Pilipino National Debate Championships in 10 days. Anna accepted a last minute offer from the newly established Debate Unit of UiTM in an effort to revitalize the English debate team that has suffered several losses in the last few months. continue reading »
